Calculate your site’s starting point

Construction facility starting point

1 toilet facility

For 20 or fewer workers, OSHA Table D-1 lists one facility. Confirm actual use, sanitation, and site requirements.

See the calculation and limits

For 20 or fewer workers: 1 facility. For 21–199: round workers ÷ 40 up, for each of toilet seats and urinals. For 200 or more: round workers ÷ 50 up, for each. The published table has overlapping wording at 20; this tool shows the “20 or less” category at that boundary. These are facility counts, not necessarily separate portable-unit counts. A unit containing both a seat and a urinal may provide both fixtures.

This is a starting point from OSHA 1926.51(c), not a compliance certification or cleaning-capacity calculation. Exceptions, sanitary condition, shift length, facility availability, and local requirements still need review.

Accessible units per cluster

1 accessible unit

10 ÷ 20 = 0.5, rounded up to 1. Calculate each separate cluster on its own.

See the calculation and limits

The U.S. Access Board guide calls for at least 5% of covered portable units in each cluster to be accessible. In whole-number terms, plan 1 for a cluster of up to 20, 2 for 21–40, and so on. This tool divides the cluster total by 20 and rounds up. The accessible units are part of your entered total, not an automatic addition to it.

It does not determine whether your site is covered, the number of restrooms needed overall, or whether a unit and its route meet all applicable criteria.

How many toilets do I need for an event?

Attendance alone cannot determine a useful event recommendation. We ask about peak attendance, hours, food and drinks, permanent facilities, activity areas, accessibility, and servicing before recommending a final count. A quick number without those details can understate what the event needs.

Send these six details for a useful recommendation

  1. Maximum people onsite at once, including staff and vendors.
  2. Event opening and closing times and whether guests stay throughout.
  3. Food, drinks, and alcohol service.
  4. Existing restrooms that guests can actually use.
  5. Separate activity areas and accessible routes.
  6. Whether cleaning can occur during or between event sessions.

For example, a 100-guest four-hour backyard gathering with available indoor restrooms is a different planning task from 100 guests at an all-day outdoor event without permanent facilities. Send those details instead of relying on attendance alone.

Ask us to recommend equipment or read the full quantity-planning guide.
